The ability to communicate is integral to students' academic and professional development. Students need an opportunity to develop their communicative competence in their disciplines and also in the global context. The Language and Communication Centre designs courses to meet the language needs of students so that they can put the language to use in the communicative tasks that await them at work.
Purpose
The Centre teaches English language-based courses, while at the same time its faculty conduct research on language learning and teaching to keep its curricula innovative. The courses combine theory with hands-on practice organized around group work and interaction to allow for the lively exchange of ideas. Students learn to communicate ideas not only through writing but also through speaking in a variety of educational and professional settings during their years in university.
The courses are as follows:
- GER-Core courses on Communication Skills and writing
- English language courses to enable students to gain proficiency in the language so that they can cope with the demands of writing, reading and speaking at tertiary level.
The Centre also administers the Qualifying English Test and the University Entrance Examinations (English and Humanities), besides offering SM2/SM3 bridging (English) programmes to students from China.
Mission Statement
The Language and Communication Centre aims to advance the teaching of and research on language and communication. It equips NTU students with the skills to communicate confidently, knowledgeably and effectively in a global setting.
