Background

The 2011 Language & Communication Centre Roundtable on Academic Writing will take place on 1 and 2 December 2011 at the School of Humanities & Social Sciences (HSS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Initiated by the Language & Communication Centre (LCC), a dynamic teaching and research centre within HSS, the Roundtable is planned in association with the Centre for Liberal Arts & Social Sciences (CLASS). The theme of the Roundtable is Issues of Academic Writing in Singapore and beyond.

The Roundtable is an annual event where academics in various institutes within Singapore are invited to present the latest work in the broad fields of corpus-based academic discourse analysis, rhetoric, and critical academic writing. The event will also be a high-profile platform for academics from universities in Singapore and the Southeast Asian region to present and discuss the most recent research done on language teaching and research, fostering research collaborations across schools and universities in the various disciplines. The Roundtable is most relevant to researchers in the fields of applied linguistics, corpus linguistics and language education. It aims to draw language educators and academics working within these fields to share their ideas on pedagogical practices and innovations that are of relevance to the teaching and research in academic writing. Academic writing skills are critical in high-impact journals, and academics in related fields are welcome to attend the Roundtable to learn about what the most recent research can reveal about rhetorical strategies for successful academic writing.

The broad thematic strands of the Roundtable and the panel-discussion topic are as follows:

  • Strand 1: Writing across the curriculum
  • Strand 2: Writing in the disciplines
  • Strand 3: Assessing academic writing
  • Panel discussion: What next? Future pedagogical directions in English for academic purposes
